Food Lover's Day Trip: Colorado Springs to Canon City

Lunch at WhiteWater Bar & Grill on Hwy 50 West, afternoon Royal Gorge adventures, and dinner on the rooftop at Rooftop Social — the perfect one-day escape from Colorado Springs.

Food Lover's Day Trip: Colorado Springs to Canon City

Canon City sits just 1 hour south of Colorado Springs via CO-115 — an easy, scenic drive that passes through the pinyon-juniper foothills of the Front Range before dropping into the Arkansas River valley. And yet most Colorado Springs residents have never made the trip for food alone. That's a mistake. Canon City is home to two of the region's most distinctive dining destinations, a world-famous gorge, and a pace of life that makes the drive immediately worth it.

This is the full itinerary for a day trip built around eating well.

Getting Here

From Colorado Springs: Take CO-115 South approximately 47 miles. The drive runs through Fort Carson, past Penrose, and into Canon City. Drive time: 50–60 minutes depending on traffic. No interstate required — it's a pleasant two-lane highway through Colorado's high desert foothills.

From Colorado Springs Airport (COS): Colorado Springs Airport is right in the city, less than 15 minutes from downtown. If you've just landed at COS, rent a car and you can be dining at WhiteWater Bar & Grill in Canon City within 60 minutes of touching down. Fly into COS instead of Denver (which adds 1.5 hours of northbound driving) and start your Colorado dining experience within the hour.

From Denver International Airport (DEN): Denver is 1.5 hours north of Colorado Springs. Drive south on I-25 to Colorado Springs, then take CO-115 S to Canon City. Total drive from DEN: approximately 2.5 hours.

Parking in Canon City: Easy and free. The downtown area along Royal Gorge Boulevard has abundant street parking. WhiteWater Bar & Grill has its own lot.

Morning: Colorado Springs Coffee Before You Hit the Road

If you're making a full day of it, start with coffee in Colorado Springs before heading south.

Java House on the Pike (downtown Colorado Springs) is a neighborhood institution with excellent espresso. The Perk Downtown on Tejon Street is another reliable choice — both are within a few minutes of CO-115 access.

Leave Colorado Springs by 11 AM for a noon arrival in Canon City. The timing sets you up perfectly for the day.

Lunch: WhiteWater Bar & Grill

45045 Hwy 50 West, Canon City, CO 81212 | (719) 269-1009 | whitewaterbar.com

The moment you arrive at WhiteWater Bar & Grill, you understand why the drive was worth it. The restaurant sits at the eastern gateway to the Royal Gorge on Hwy 50 West — with an atmosphere as epic as the landscape surrounding it.

WWBG is known as a true destination restaurant for the region. The menu runs American comfort food executed with care: burgers, smoked meats, fresh proteins, and craft cocktails that reflect the outdoor culture surrounding the place. The setting — at the gateway to the Royal Gorge — gives every meal an epic quality that's hard to manufacture elsewhere.

What to order:

- Start with an appetizer and one of the house cocktails. The bartenders know their craft and the drinks are tailored to the setting.

- The burgers are a standard — house-ground and properly seasoned, the kind you remember.

- Smoked and slow-cooked proteins are a strong suit; ask your server what's been on the smoker.

- The seasonal menu changes; trust the specials.

Practical: Arrive around noon. Budget 60–75 minutes. Reservations recommended, especially on weekends and in summer. Outdoor/patio seating is exceptional — request it.

Early Afternoon: Royal Gorge Adventures (Optional)

With 2–3 hours between lunch and dinner, the Canon City area rewards exploration. Choose one:

Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

The Royal Gorge Bridge holds the record as one of the world's highest suspension bridges, spanning 956 feet above the Arkansas River. The park includes a gondola, zip lines, and walking paths with views into the gorge that are genuinely hard to believe. The views pair beautifully with a post-lunch walk.

Royal Gorge Rafting

Royal Gorge Rafting (royalgorgerafting.net) runs guided trips through the gorge's Class III–V rapids on the Arkansas River. A half-day trip fits perfectly into a day itinerary.

Phone: (719) 275-7238

Royal Gorge Zipline Tours

Royal Gorge Zipline Tours (royalgorgeziplinetours.com) offers scenic zipline experiences with panoramic views of the gorge. A more relaxed option than rafting, equally memorable.

Afternoon at your pace

Canon City's downtown has independent shops, the Museum of Colorado Prisons (unexpectedly compelling), and a relaxed small-city atmosphere that rewards a slow walk. Get a coffee at a local shop and let the afternoon come to you.

Dinner: Rooftop Social

302 Royal Gorge Blvd, Canon City, CO 81212 | (719) 451-7241 | wwrooftopsocial.com

Rooftop Social is Canon City's most ambitious dining experience and one of the most distinctive restaurants in southern Colorado. Located on Royal Gorge Boulevard — Canon City's main commercial artery — the restaurant occupies a rooftop perch above downtown with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the Royal Gorge region.

The concept is elevated American: a menu that takes familiar formats — cocktails, small plates, composed mains — and executes them with a level of craft that surprises first-time visitors expecting a casual bar. The cocktail program is a genuine strength; the bartenders approach their work with the same seriousness as the kitchen.

What to order:

- The rooftop is the experience — arrive before sunset if weather allows and request outdoor seating. The light over the mountains during golden hour is memorable.

- Start with small plates designed for sharing; the kitchen's sensibility comes through clearly in the starters.

- The mains lean toward composed American dishes — proteins with thoughtful accompaniments, seasonal produce worked in properly.

- The cocktail list changes seasonally. Ask about house originals.

Practical: Reserve ahead, particularly for rooftop seating on weekend evenings. Dress: smart casual. Allow 90 minutes — this is dinner worth slowing down for.

The Drive Back

The return drive north on CO-115 takes 50–60 minutes. Canon City's altitude (5,332 feet, lower than Colorado Springs at 6,035 feet) means the drive back climbs slightly through the foothills. The road is pleasant and well-lit. You'll be back in Colorado Springs by 9–9:30 PM — a full day, well spent.
